Blanche DuBois, the main character of "A streetcar named desire", is compared to a moth due to the fact that she is always escaping from the light but, at the same time, she is attracted to light. Therefore, as a moth, light leads her to her death.
Blanche is always running away from the past, from all the contradictions, from what she wants to be and what she really is. She is running away from responsibilities, But at the same time, she is running away from her ancestors, for her own responsibilities for what she has done in the past.
Light has the capacity to reveal the smallest detail of people's image, even the defects that people wants to hide, in other words, light has the power to reveal the truth. That's why Blanche always escaped from the light and also refused to say her age, because she never wanted to overcome the reality of her past, her truth. It also has to do with the fact that she doesn't want to reveal her fading beauty, especially to Mitch, because everything for her is about appearance and the necessity of showing her life as it should be rather than as it really is. Hence, she can't stand light because she realizes that her reality is much near its end.
Blanche is condemned to live in a world full of lies as she doesn't want to accept her fate. She has to deal with a world in which she doesn't belong, because she wants to give an illusion of innocence and possibilities that are no longer possible. To fit it, she is going to have to be honest, but when she is honest she is rejected.
The only problem with it is that, when someone is honest, people can't stand what is the real "you", in other words, people prefer the appearances. People prefer lies. Isn't it ironic?
