I am pretty sure that every time you heard the word Por Art you think about Andy Warhol and the image of Marilyn Monroe. Why is that?
Pop Art is a controversial art movement that emerged in the a1950's. Its controversy relies on two aspects. First of all, it is the polar opposite to the previous art movements, the Abstract expressionism and the all high art themes.
Moreover, it is based on common elements from the popular culture and mass media, for instance, advertisement and comic. It is also worth to mention that Pop art takes mundane objects in order to emphasise this feature, most of the times using irony.
As the others postmodernist movements, the Pop art reflects a criticism of the society, It criticises the mass marketing and the consumer culture as a result of progress after Worl War II. Andy Warhol’s Gold Marilyn Monroe tries to reflect that, tries to reflect that the society of that time was obssesed with fame. Warhol combined an image of Marilyn Monroe with a gold background so as to imitate a religious Catholic tradition of painted icons and tranformed the Hollywood star in a kind of Byzantine virgin which reflects the obssesion of society.
"Pop is everything art hasn't been for the last two decades. It's basically a U-turn back to a representational visual communication, moving at a break-away speed... Pop is a re-enlistment in the world...It is the American Dream, optimistic, generous and naive"

ResponderEliminarI couldn't agree more with you. Furthermore, I feel that what Warhol attempted was to show how loneliness and depression are hidden throughout the beautiful image of this pop star smiling for the cameras. But what happens when the spot lights go off?
