There is something about Americans that has indirectly been
shown or at the same time omitted to us while reading Faulkner’s stories and William’s plays; it is about
U.S Americans’ idiosyncrasy.
What characterizes Americans the most is selfishness and
individualism. It seems to me as if the world was reduced to the north and South’s
ideology. Maybe Faulkner has very well explained how this idyllic desire of the
south could no longer persist, but still having said that, there is nothing
else than themselves in the world. It is white and black to them.
On the other hand, the north, in my view, has been projected
as the hero of the movie. We all know that Northern capitalist states and Lincoln
did not want to set slaves free for the sake of democracy and the good will,
instead, according to Eduardo Galeano the south became a northern colony. It was
not a moral cause triumph and the new industries were not born thanks to humanitarianism:
the south offered cheaper workforces and energies.
They did not care about the growth and spread of capitalism
and the consequences it may have caused (and indeed caused) because even though
they are from the south, they are Americans any way.
I was really amazed by the interpretations made out from the
book. I enjoyed it from a literary point of view , however, I cannot stand
their view on the rest of the world.
From my perspective, the world had two
choices, either it became all like the south or the way we know the world like
it is. We are and were always on the fence, in other words, we have become a
northern colony just like the south used to be.
